-David Byun
David Byun is an incredible photographer of hair.
My favourite images of his are the ones of which include the hair being flipped. The hair is captured mid-air, which gives a sense of the hair having a mind of its own.
The top left image is composed with symmetry. The use of the white spot light on the centre of the images makes your eye first go to where the two ladies hair meet. The colours in the image are all very natural, this portrays the message that women should be happy in their own skin, and should not want to change their appearance.
Response - Hair flips
My teacher and I went into the studio to try out some 'hair flip' photographs.
First she took some images of me, to see how it would work with long hair;
In this image, you can see the texture of the hair being dry, and also the waves in the hair. This shot looks surreal, as the hair is stood up right, which first catches your attention. The subject is central, which helps with the aesthetics of the image.
The hair in the photo is spread out more, so you can see the patterns that the waves in the hair create. However, the photo would have been better if the whole head of hair was in shot, so you could see the fullness of the patterns.
I found out from this shoot that it was harder to take photos of long hair when it is moving, as it can go out of the shot. Therefore I did another shoot with my friend, who has a bit shorter hair, so that it would be easier to gage where the hair was going to go;
This photo has caught the hair in the middle of the flip. Even though it covers the models face, I feel that the image shows how crazy hair can look. I like the smudge effect that it shows, as I captured the movement.
This is probably my favourite image of the shoot, as the shape of the hair makes the subject more interesting to look at. Also, the colour of the hair fades from light brown to dark brown, also making it more appealing.
